70% of South 24 Parganas lacked safe drinking water, and rising sea levels had depleted fisheries, affecting 87% of the population – Addressing this necessitated a holistic approach, considering ecological and biodiversity preservation. Our task was to design a livelihood program for the Sundarbans, through extensive research, expert consultations, and stakeholder discussions, we proposed sustainable initiatives in agriculture, dairy, and fisheries.
In agriculture, combatting high salinity involved innovative practices such as cultivating salt-tolerant crops and implementing suitable cropping systems. Comprehensive support, including access to quality inputs, credit, and technical assistance, was deemed crucial. Similarly, in the dairy sector, discussions with farmers revealed the need to enhance the value chain. Proposals included setting up fodder units to ensure nutrient-rich feed throughout the year.
Our research methodology comprised focused group discussions (FGDs), open-house sessions, and expert consultations. Interactions with experts and institutions like Sundarbans Development Board (SDB), National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), as well as engagement with local organizations (CBOs, FPOs) aimed to identify gaps and propose interventions. A validating workshop with institutions, FPOs, CBOs, and farmers ensured a collaborative, research-backed approach to address the complex livelihood challenges faced by the communities in the Sundarbans.
